New York City: The first wines of New York were produced in the 17th century by Dutch settlers, in what is now the New Utrecht section of Brooklyn. Today there are at least three wineries each in Brooklyn and Manhattan and one winery in the Bronx.In case you are trying to memorize them, these are the wine regions of New York State: This is by far among the most informative tourist maps I have ever seen, and we have Governor Cuomo, Empire State Development, Wine EnthusiastMagazine and the NY Wine & Grape Foundation to thank for it. You almost have to know its location in order to find a particular business. Also, in the Foundation's newsletter, Trezise mentioned the map includes an alphabetical listing of businesses.
This drawback applies to the Discover the Wineries of NY State map. I hate it that Google Map’s design does not allow scrolling. Clicking on a business' icon gets you its physical address, phone number and a link to its website. What is better, the map clearly shows the primary and secondary roads that will get you to your destination. You can click on and off icons for wineries, other craft beverage producers as well as places to stay, to eat and to sight see. Once up, the map clearly shows officially designated NY State wine regions as well as other wine regions not yet sporting an official federal appellation. This is the scope of the map that pops up after you click “Start the Adventure”.
